Dermatology

Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist is specialist doctor that manages diseases, in the widest sense, and some cosmetic problems of the skin, hair and nails.

Within the field of dermatology, there are three main specialties a candidate may choose to focus on. Medical dermatology focuses on a patient’s overall health and wellness and may include the treatment of occupational dermatitis, psoriasis, and foot fungus. Cosmetic dermatology deals with the aesthetics of hair, skin, and nails, removing benign but unsightly moles and suggesting anti-aging techniques. Lastly, a dermatologist may choose to enter the surgical field. The job description of this particular specialty includes more invasive and, in some cases, life-threatening procedures, such as the removal of cancerous tumors.
